Creative Wish 2027

mc

Cork County Council, in partnership with the Creative Ireland Programme, is delighted to announce the return of My Creative Wish for 2027, an initiative that gives children and young people the opportunity to turn their creative ideas into reality. Aligned with Cruinniú na nÓg, Ireland's national day of free creativity for children and young people, the programme celebrates imagination, curiosity, and creative expression by inviting participants to share a creative experience they would love to explore.

Schools and youth groups interested in taking part can request an application pack by emailing creativeireland@corkcoco.ie before 23rd October 2026. The closing date for applications is 13th November 2026.

Growing Carrots with Video Tutorial Courtesy GIY Ireland

Carrots Why Grow It? Perhaps not quite for the beginner, carrots are difficult enough to grow and require a deep, light, stone free, fertile soil to do well. But if you get the soil right, you will be rewarded with a crunchy, sweet and flavoursome crop which will store well.  Two or three well-timed sowings of carrots should see you self-sufficient all year round in this classic stockpot vegetable (which is full of vitamin A).  The GIYer can also try out lots of different varieties of carrots (generally speaking such variety is not on offer in supermarkets).  We generally associate carrots with the colour orange, when in fact you can grow carrots of other colours too - before the 1700s most carrots were purple or white in colour (the orange carrot was developed relatively recently to honour the Royal House of Orange in Holland). It is in effect two vegetables in one – you can enjoy both the leaves and the coloured stems. It is also easy to grow. SOWING Chard will grow in most reasonable soil, but will grow better and produce more in soil that has had some compost and general fertiliser added. Try adding a general fertiliser 1-2 weeks before sowing/transplanting. Chard and perpetual spinach are both types of beetroot grown for their leaves. There are two options when growing chard: growing for baby leaf ‘cut-and-come-again’ crops or growing for large plants. Sowings can be made from April to July. Baby leaf crops should be sown direct, thinly, at 2-3cm deep in rows 20cm apart. If you’re after large plants, then you should sow in module trays for later transplanting. Sow one seed per module. Transplant when 10-15cm tall, 15cm apart in rows 30cm apart. Al...
